That’s a big question. It depends to some extent on what stage of your career you’re at. The more experienced you become, the more practical experience you’ll accumulate as to what works. You can learn the theory from books. You can learn the theory from training courses, but real people development involves getting to know the individual, what motivates them, and inspiring them to achieve more. All leaders should assess themselves, identify gaps and attempt to plug them. I would actually ask some of my more senior or mature staff to appraise me (upwards appraisal) to find out what I did well and what they would appreciate me doing differently. We never stop learning.
