Deferring student loan repayments in the first year of employment

I’ve heard of people doing this, and I assume it’s because they earn less than a certain threshold. Is there any other way of getting out of repayments for a year or so following your first job? A friend of mine claimed he rang SLC up and simply “refused to pay” for a year, and they deferred for him - not sure how credible that is though.

dont forget your still being charged interest at 4.8% so i dont see why they wouldnt mind you defering as you end up paying more! Also ppl make voluntary payments as automatic deductions arent always made.
