Covering Letters

How do you guys go about these? How long, what do you put in them etc?

The graduate website that I’m applying for jobs on has a box that allows up to 4,000 characters on a covering letter, yet I’m rarely using more than 600. I like to keep things short and to the point, I also don’t want to just end up repeating sections of my CV.

I have a generic four paragraph letter that I tend to slightly alter for each appication. 1st: line what degree i have, where I live 2nd: 1 or 2 sentences about why I’d be a good candidate or the job, 3rd: young/enthusatic/up for challenge etc 4th: Commuting info.

This sound OK?

thanks a lot of your help.
