Accepted an internship offer, now want to do a different one

#1

I applied and was given an offer on a summer internship scheme at one of the big 4 about 3 months ago (lets call them company number 1). I was very pleased with this offer at the time, and felt interested in the job offered so I signed the contract and accepted.

However, about 2 months ago, I found a different summer internship scheme with company number 2. It looked more interesting than the role I accepted a job offer for at company number 1, so I applied. Company 2 have since offered me a place on their internship scheme. I would definitely prefer this internship as looking long-term: the job looks more interesting, has better potential pay and exit options and I prefer company 2’s culture.

The problem is getting out of the contract I’ve signed with company number 1. It does seem a unfair to company 1, but ethics aside, has anybody got any advice to me how I could go about getting out of this contract/whether they’re likely to even let me do so?

Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
